Buns scores 20, WCLT downs NEH
CRYSTAL LAKE - Casey Buns scored 20 points to pace the Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka boys' basketball team past Northeast Hamilton Friday, 58-54.
Buns was nine for 16 from the floor. He also made six steals.
Scott Meinders scored 11 points in a supporting role while also grabbing nine boards.
Andrew Hanna had nine points and grabbed eight caroms.
"Our kids really stepped it up defensively in the last four minutes," WCLT coach Seth Thompson said.
The Tigers were down by 10 points with 3:30 to go, but then made a big 14-0 run to pull it out.
"We were able to find the energy and motivation to turn up our intensity to get some key defensive stops and turnovers, which fueled things for us on the offensive end," Thompson said.
Thompson added that everyone on the floor for the Tigers contributed in the comeback. They also felt the energy from the home crowd.
"After a tough last-second loss Tuesday at Ventura, this showed a lot about the character of these kids to be able to come back and win a game like this," Thompson said.

Ventura 64, Tigers 62
VENTURA - A sluggish second half doomed the Tigers in their second match-up with Ventura in eight days, losing 64-62.
Buns led the scoring for the Tigers with 18 points on 9-13 shooting. He also pulled in 11 rebounds on the night.
Steve Tjaden backed that up with 16 points on 6-11 from the floor, including 4-9 in treys.
Meinders also scored 14 points, shooting 5-11 from the field and 4-6 from the free throw line.
"We came out flat in the beginning of the second half," Thompson said.
"We had a few stretches in the second and third quarters where our defense fell apart and gave up too many uncontested shots. Also, we had too many unforced turnovers that Ventura, to their credit, was able to capitalize on."
The Tigers took a 13-10 lead after the opening stanza, and led 31-26 at the halftime intermission.
The Vikings recovered to take a 50-44 advantage into the final frame. Both teams traded the lead several times in the final eight minutes.
"Ventura has matured and improved greatly over these last two years," Thompson said. "They have some players that are very quick and tough to defend."
