WH students ready for college visits

While many high school students are focused on the task at hand, West Hancock High School will offer an opportunity to start planning for the future when they host a college fair, November 7 from 4-7 p.m. at West Hancock High School.

"It's for anyone in the community who is interested in going to college,'' West Hancock Advisor Mary Clark, who organized the event. "It's for students of all ages and adults that may be considering going back or to college for the first time. We've also invited schools from 10-20 districts to come if they would like information.

"Student, parents wit's open to anyone who wants to come, or may want information.''

The event is being put on in the fall to help upper classmen get a focus on schools they may be attending in the in the fall, as well as prepare students for courses they may want to take in the spring.

"Algona and Belmond-Klemme each do a fair in the spring,'' Clark said. "WE were thinking to offer one in the fall. It will help students plan ahead and we were able to get a lot of colleges to come.''

The event should be helpful to the students, but just as helpful to parents.

"Lots of times, you have parents that haven't been to college in years and might not know what's all out there,'' Clark said. "That's why we wanted to bring in as many college representatives as possible.''

Helping parents plan is one goal, but the main focus is on the student.

"By spring most kids know where they're going, but some still don't,'' Clark said. "Having the event in the fall, helps get kids to start thinking about where they want to go. It also helps the younger students. They can find out what classes they should take in high school to prepare them for college. Kids can find out how many years of foreign language and sciences they need to take, as well the grades they need to have.''

The program has been in the works for some time, and has taken a lot of effort to organize.

"It took many, many phone calls,'' Clark said. "It basically started with a list of colleges we wanted to ask, and then it turned into finding an available date.

“We didn't want to have to do it on a day there might be football playoffs, so we started the day after. It's also Voting Day, so maybe when people are out voting they can stop by and get some information.''
