Get a Clue at the library

Summer reading program kicks off on July 28 with a mime/magician act.

Hey kids (and moms and dads)! Summertime doesn't have to equal the, “I'm bored, what is there to do,” blues. Open a book and join the activities at the Britt Public Library during the month of July.

Get a Clue @ Your Library is the theme of this year's summer reading program. Mystery and magic aren't the only topics where “clues” are used. Kids will also use clues to make facinating discoveries into things they know nothing about.

The program will kick off on Thursday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. with the mime and magician act “Fax Gilbert.” The show is free of charge and open to the whole community regardless of registration for the reading program.

Kids who have not already registered for the summer reading program may do so that day said library director Linda Friedow.

The summer itinerary, with activities and prizes to be earned, will be on display that day to get kids excited about reading.

Each program participant, from students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade completion, will get a time sheet to keep track of the minutes they have read.

“They can read whatever they want,” Friedow said.

“Younger groups will be read to but older kids may pick one big book and read at it all summer if they choose.”

Regular weekly sessions

will cover a topic for the day then kids will do a craft, activity or game related to topic and the Get a Clue theme. “It will be a fun and learning experience,” Friedow said.

Prizes will be awarded each week for completed activites and reading contract and just for showing up. Everyone will get something.

In addition to the time log kids will be given a list of extra incentives to complete, or not, as they wish. The incentive card will be punched as kids complete the activity and extra prizes are awarded for these.

“They don't all involve reading,” Friedow said. “It encourages the reluctant reader and gives them a reward.”

“We use entertainment to get them into the library,” she said, “but we stress the reading too. Studies show kids who read over the summer retain more,” of what they have learned.

And at the end of the summer the library, thanks to Friends of the Library, hosts a mystery field trip. Last year they went to Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines because the summer theme was animals.

“I don't tell them where, I just promise it will be fun,” Friedow said.

There will be preschool story hour on Tuesday evenings beginning July 10 and running for four weeks. “We didn't want to leave out the little kids,” Friedow said. Each evening will include a full hour of reading, makeing a craft, playing a game and having a snack plus checking out books.

Last year the library had between 60 to 70 school-aged kids participate in the program. and about a dozen pre-schoolers. Don't be left out this summer. Come on in and Get a Clue.
