Eagle Grove meet has Cardinals feeling good about home stretch
NIC meet is this Thursday
By MATT FOY
News-Tribune sports writer
EAGLE GROVE - The state didn't do the Garner-Hayfield/West Hancock Cardinals any favors by sending them to Estherville for their district-regional meet. But the Cards aren't letting their tough road get them down - they're elevating their game.
The Cards saw some of the same teams they'll face at districts/regionals at Eagle Grove on Oct. 3. If Eagle Grove was a postseason preview, Garner-Hayfield-West Hancock and coach Jeff Short have to be pleased with their prospects.
The Cardinal girls, ranked 13th in the latest 3A poll, took first place at Eagle Grove with 45 points. They beat five of the 11 teams that will also be at Estherville, including No. 5 Estherville-Lincoln Center, which finished two points behind the Cards. Spencer finished a distant third.
Short says those two teams, along with No. 3 Spirit Lake Park, are the teams to beat if his girls are going to make a return trip to state.
"I was hoping to get close to them (Estherville), but to beat them, oh man, that was exciting," Short said.
The Cards had three in the top seven. The leader was Konnie Keifer, who finished second and led much of the race, but the x-factor was an amazing race run by Melony McDermott, who finished fourth - her best finish in the standings ever.
Lauren Opp was consistently excellent, finishing seventh. Danielle Jakoubek made a big move up to 12th, and Britney Formanek finished 20th.
"The whole team ran super," Short said, "but Mel and Danielle really came through. They really stepped up that night."
The Cardinal boys also had a strong showing against the teams they must battle at districts.
Garner-Hayfield/West Hancock finished third with 71 points. Finishing in front of the Cards was Spencer (41) and No. 9 Algona (48), both of which will be at Estherville, as will No. 3 Spirit Lake Park.
Aaron Siegrist, ranked 17th among Class 3A boys, finished fourth to pace the Cardinals. Ben Lau and Erik Jolivette chipped in top 10 finishes, coming in seventh and ninth, respectively. Aric Siegrist finished 19th; Micah Howe finished 32nd.
"We ran really well as a team," Short said. "I was really happy with them."
The Cards followed the Eagle Grove meet with tough practices the rest of the week, including a tough day of running hills at Klemme on Wednesday.
The Cardinals have a big week coming up, starting with Monday night's Forest City Invitational. They will return to Forest City on Thursday for the NIC meet.
Though there are advantages to getting an advance shot at Bear Creek Golf Course, the site of the NIC meet, Short said he didn't like the idea of looking past the Forest City Invitational.
"I hate to tell kids one race is more important that the other one - we want to win them both," he said, “but I think we have shot at winning the conference for the boys and the girls. We're going to give it our best shot.
"I think the girls and boys are right where they need to be."
