Hancock County Foundation awards grants
By ANGIE JOHANNSEN, News-Tribune Editor
Another successful financial year for the Hancock County Foundation (HCF) means good new for many county organizations.
The group has announced the list of HCF grant awards for the fall 2007 cycle. A total of $53,384 was awarded to 18 recipients throughout Hancock.
Corwith Mayor Jay Gourley, who sits on the Foundation board, says the amount awarded is “a good way to make the county grow without doing it through taxes.”
Much of the money from the foundation comes from state gambling. The 85 counties without casinos share a percentage of the profits from the state gambling revenues.
“The Legislature should be complimented because they have increased the level of revenues going back to our counties,” Gourley said. “Next year we project to receive about $140,000.”
The newest recipients are:
City of Corwith - $4,187 for Picnic Table and Park Benches; West Hancock Ambulance Service - $3,600 for Defibrillators for Schools in Hancock County; Britt Food Bank - $1,000 for Beef and Pork Products; Hancock County Conservation Board - $550 for Bike Route Signs; West Hancock CSD - $4,000 for Heart Rate Monitors and Class Packs; Britt Police Department - $4,097 for Radar Trailer and Radar Unit; Britt Fire Department - $3,000 for Extrication Equipment; Garner-Hayfield CSD - $2,000 for Workforce Development Speaker; Garner-Hayfield CSD - $5,000 for HS Library Books and Software; Klemme Public Library - $3,000 for Library Shelving; Woden Public Library - $2,500 for Improvement to Children's Section; Garner Ministerial Association - $1,000 for Food Locker Freezer and Refrigerator; Liberty School Museum, Inc - $1,600 for Bell Tower Removal and Replacement; Britt Draft Horse Association - $3,500 to Replace Wooden Horse Stall; Hancock County Historical Society - $4,000 for Larson-Armstrong House Repairs and the Hancock County Ag - Society $6,000 for New Building Construction
HCF has awarded grants of over $150,000 since it was founded in 2005. Grants awarded by HCF have leveraged projects throughout Hancock County totaling over a million dollars.
“Spreading the money throughout the county was a goal from the inception of the board and the foundation,” Gourley said. “Every one of our communities has been a recipient, and that's a rewarding feeling.”
