Waldorf Community Artist Series bringing opera to Forest City

FOREST CITY - OPERA Iowa, the Des Moines Opera's touring troupe, will present “Don Pasquale” on Monday, Feb. 4 as part of the Waldorf Community Artist Series. The show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

The comedic opera portrays the story of Norina and Ernesto, two star-crossed lovers who are forbidden to marry by Ernesto's uncle Pasquale. The couple soon enlists the help of Pasquale's doctor to help them trick the grumpy old bachelor. Soon Don Pasquale's life becomes even more complicated than he had ever imagined.

“Don Pasquale” combines a love story with elements of classic Italian commedia dell'arte, the theatrical tradition that places stock characters in amusing situations to create a comedy meant to entertain the masses. “Don Pasquale” shines as one of the great comedies by bel canto composer Gaetano Donizetti.

Founded in 1986, Des Moines Metro Opera's award-winning touring troupe will present the full-length 50-minute opera in English. All Waldorf Community Artist Series ticket holders and all Waldorf staff and students are invited to attend. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

For ticket information, please phone the Waldorf College Music Department at 641-585-8177 or 1-800-292-1903, ext. 8177, or e-mail Charlotte Fredrickson at fredrickc@waldorf.edu.
