Warrior diamond teams enjoy big days at MCC tourneys
The Waldorf Collge softball team won a pair of games at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament on Thursday in Moline, Ill., while the Warriors' baseball team opened the MCC tournament in Waterloo with a 13-1 win over Mount Mercy.
Start with the softball team, which beat Iowa Wesleyan 4-3 in eight innings in its opening game before blanking Clarke College 2-0 in the semifinals. Chesley Dougherty pitched 11 scoreless innings Thursday to pick up the decision in both contests. She struck out 19 in her two wins.
Waldorf advances to face Grand View College today at 11 a.m. in the winner's bracket final of the double-elimination tournament.
On the baseball front, Waldorf's Mason Duckett and Bryan Kloetzke each drove in four runs and Brandon Pitz struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter while tossing a complete-game five-hitter. The seventh-seeded Warriors (11-23) advance to take on third-seeded Grand View College in game four of the tournament on Friday at noon at Riverfront Stadium.
