Tuesday Afternoon Fire

House a total loss

CRYSTAL LAKE - The cause of a fire that destroyed an abandoned two-story house three miles east of Crystal Lake Tuesday is currently under investigation, according to Hancock County sheriff's deputy Daniel Smith.

The house, which was vacated in April by its tenants, was a total loss and according to Smith, "burned to the ground."

Crystal Lake and Forest City firefighters were called to the blaze at 3215 Maple St. about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, but the house's roof was already engulfed in flames by that time, Smith said.

Though the house was abandoned and there were no injuries reported, some of the former tenants' belongings were still in the house and were also a total loss.

State Fire Marshall Brian Shupe, who works out of the Mason City office, will inspect the damage Wednesday or Thursday, but as of Wednesday morning, the house was still too hot to enter, Smith said.

"We have no idea what the cause was, and we won't know anything until the fire marshall inspects the house," Smith said.

The fire was originally reported by a person who passed by the house in his motor vehicle.
