FOREST CITY - Different nights, different heroes, same results.
The Waldorf College men's basketball team made its trip to Missouri a successful one this past weekend as the Warriors came away with two wins at the Ozark Christian College Classic.
The Warriors got 19 points from Jeff Comminey and closed the game with a 7-0 run to beat Manhattan Christian Classic on Friday before rolling over Ozark 89-49 on Saturday as Chris Holloway scored a career-high 20 points and Michael Granucci chipped in 16.
“We aren't the deepest team in the world,” Waldorf coach Chad Brown said, “but obviously, the nine guys we do play are pretty even. It does send a message to everyone that if they don't want to play the way we want to play or act the way we want them to act, there's guys ready to step in.”
The two wins pushed Waldorf's record to 4-1, and Brown said the solid start has come about even though his team's offensive execution hasn't exactly been stellar.
“We got a lot off our defense Saturday,” he said, “but the best part of that game was when we didn't score in transition, we set up and actually ran some half-court offense.”
Brown also was happy with the win over Manhattan, a team that trailed Midwest Collegiate Conference-favorite William Penn by just four points with six minutes to go on Saturday.
“I think the one thing I can say about this group is they're gritty,” Brown sid. “Manhattan's not an easy team to play. They run all kinds of time off the clock on offense and really get after you on defense but we stuck in there.”
Waldorf will travel to Chicago this weekend for the Moody Four Tournament, and the Warriors first game comes against Fontbonne, which went 21-7 a year ago and made the NAIA Division III tournament.
“That's a test because they're the best team we've seen this year, by far.”
