Holiday fun continues in Britt this week

With snow on the ground in Britt now, it seems fitting that a flurry of holiday activities are kicking up in town.

Retailers, the Britt Chamber of Commerce, local community groups and shoppers will all rejoice in the many offerings Britt has to offer this season.

This Friday, Dec. 5, will be Supper with Santa at the Britt Municipal Building from 5-7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Hobo Foundation and the After Prom Committee. Families are encouraged to bring their kids for photos with Santa.

Santa's Workshop will also be held that same day, from 4-7 p.m. at the Britt Library. The proceeds will go to the Hancock County Relay for Life.

“This is a terrific project for our youth. They so enjoy the opportunity to shop for their Mom, Dad and family members, and they are so proud at Christmas time to have had this opportunity,” said Chamber of Commerce Director Sue Miller Taylor.

Westview Care Center will also have a holiday event for people and their pets Saturday, Dec. 6. Their Pics with Pets promotion will run from 1:30 to 3:30 at the center. Santa Claus will be there to take photos with pets and share some Christmas spirit.

Hancock County Little Theater will present its annual Christmas Concert under the direction of Diane Nall on Sunday, December 7. The choir, whose members live in Britt, Corwith, Garner, Kanawha, Titonka and Woden, will be singing a variety of seasonal selections including religious songs such as “Good Christian Men Rejoice,” that features a piano duet by Myra Bowman and Rhonda Budlong. Other selections will feature soloists from the area such as Jim Sweers, singing “The Christmas Song” (Merry Christmas to You) made famous by Mel Torme. Mrs. Nall, whose directing and teaching experience spans many years, has said of the choir, “I've never had the pleasure of directing a choir that has worked as hard as this one.”

The Joyful Sounds Bell Choir under the direction of Rhonda Budlong, will also be a part of this year's concert and will accompany the choir as well as perform their own selections for the enjoyment of the audience.

Two concerts will be performed. The afternoon concert will be held at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church at p.m. The evening concert will be held at the United Methodist Church in Britt at 7:30 p.m. Christmas cookies and hot cider will be served following the concerts.

The Britt firemen are already busy planning all the delicious soups and treats they'll make for their annual holiday fundraiser. Saturday, Dec. 13, the department will host its annual firemen's soup supper at the Municipal Building from 5-7 p.m.

That evening, stores will be open later with specials, and Santa Claus will be visiting with children and their families.

Taylor says the longer store hours that evening give people even more reason to stay in town and shop for the holidays.

“You can shop right here where it's warm and cozy, no trying to slip through the crowd,” said Taylor. “And, if you stay in Britt, you may find yourself engaged in a friendly conversation and you can browse many items until you find those very special ones.”

The Tour of Lights will be held downtown during the soup supper. The event is also a contest for Britt residents sponsored by the Chamber.

If you enjoy decorating the outside of your home, then now is the time to share your fun with your neighbors. Sign up is at the Chamber office in the Cobbler Shoppe until Dec. 8.

Dixie's Chicks will be hosting a Jingle Bell Walk to ring out cancer on Dec. 13. They invite everyone to come downtown, walk for a great cause and have some fun. An entry form can be found in this week's News-Tribune.

Westview Care Center will also hold another event for Santa and his visitors this season. For those with a craving for a cold treat, Sundaes with Santa will be held Sunday, Dec. 21 from 2-3:30 p.m. The center encourages people to have their children dress up for special photos with Santa.

Westview Care Center Marketing Director Marylou Boothroyd says the events are a great chance to integrate the assisted living facility with the rest of the community.

"It's a lot of fun for our residents to come out and see the kids having fun; we all enjoy the activities," said Boothroyd.

"And as for the pics with pets program, well, we're big pet lovers here and we love to see people with their animals. We've even had some people take photos with their dogs and Santa here and use them for Christmas cards.

"It's all just a lot of fun for us and it's great for the residents."
